Details
The MC68881 is a floating-point coprocessor manufactured by Motorola that was introduced in 1984. It is designed to work in conjunction with the Motorola 68000 series of microprocessors, enhancing their floating-point computational capabilities. The MC68881 operates at clock speeds of up to 16.67 MHz and is built on a 2-micrometer NMOS process.The coprocessor features a 32-bit data bus, an internal 56-bit floating-point arithmetic unit, and a set of eight 80-bit floating-point registers. It performs floating-point arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as transcendental functions like logarithms and trigonometric calculations. The MC68881 also supports single-precision and double-precision floating-point formats.The coprocessor communicates with the main processor through a serial interface using a set of instructions known as the MC68881 instruction set. The coprocessor can operate in either host mode, where it is controlled by the main processor, or standalone mode, where it can execute floating-point instructions independently.
